I think the 300 mm lens may have contributed to the excellent image quality, 
to say nothing about the genius behind the viewfinder.

Yes. it did.  If I would give any advice it would be that to get 
proffesional results you must buy proffesional gear, no one carries 
those white lumps of lens around for fun.  Sigma and co are OK on a 
sunny day but for Wales f2.8 is not a luxury. [The times I've watched 
photo opportunities fly by in the murk]. I've always been a Canon man 
but certainly five years ago Nikon had the edge with their 300mm f2.8 - 
today I've no idea. What I can tell you is that the price of a new Canon 
300mm f2.8 would also buy you a very nice second hand car !
